Solar panel installation (Part 1)

Frame construction is finished and the installation of panels has begun.

Ｆirst, take three panels, put them on this working table and attach them to a pipe:

Next,  lift the pipe up onto the frame and attach it there.

This was a bit of a memorable moment in the history of Oo solar sharing plant: The very first panels were mounted on the frame: 　

At this time, our architect Matsuoka-san was there too (in the lower left corner of the picture above, wearing white helmet.)

Finally our place started to resemble a solar sharing project!

The first row of panels was completed the day after the panel installation started.

A few days later, including weekend break, there were three rows done:

パネル取り付け（その１）

架台の工事が終わり、パネルの取り付けが始まりました。

ダンボールの中で自分の出番を待っているパネルたち：

まずはこの作業台でパネルを3枚並べて、単管パイプに取り付けます。

パネルのついた単管パイプを架台の上に持ち上げて、架台に取り付けます。

おお発電所の歴史でちょっとした記念すべき瞬間：最初のパネルが架台の上に上がりました：　

この時は、設計をしてくださっている松岡さんも来ていました（↑写真の左下で白いヘルメットをかぶっています。）

これでやっとソーラーシェアリングらしい格好に近づきました。

パネル取り付け開始日の次の日に、一列目のパネルが全部つきました：

週末をはさんで数日後は3列目まで完成：

昨日9/19にはもうパネルの大半がついていました：

Construction continues: beams and braces

The construction has quite progressed last week.

All pillars now stand in their place. The next stage is attaching horizontal pipes to the pillars 3 meters above the ground. The horizontal pipes are (probably) called beams. With no engineering background, I'm increasingly grappling to find the right vocabulary. If you notice any big mistake in these articles, let me know! 

 

This is a picture from ground works. Workmen are setting up a pillar while measuring the exact position.

All pillars are now standing! Ground works completed:

 

If you look closer at the picture above, in the back you can see a few horizontal pipes attached to the pillars. The workmen had set them up experimentally as the last thing on that day. A closer view:

To make the frame strong and stable, it's important to connect pillars and beams with diagonal pipes called braces.

 

There are 3 to 4 braces per pillar, and each connecting point has to be attached with a clamp, so it might take some time to finish.

Unlike the first week of construction, the second week was cloudy and with cooler temperatures,　so the work was probably easier. On the other hand, rainy days might have been tougher than the hot but sunny days last week. Despite the rain workmen did a great job again.

For my fellow non-engineer non-native speakers who are as clueless about beams and braces as I am, here's how I understand it. I hope it's right:

基礎工事完了、梁＋筋交いの取り付け開始

先週一週間で工事がずいぶん進みました。

柱の基礎工事が終わり、３メートルの高さに横方向で単管パイプを取り付ける作業が始まりました。これを梁（はり）と言うそうです。建築用語がさっぱり分からない私にはとても読めない漢字です。

 

まだ基礎工事の時に、作業員の方が寸法を測りながら柱を建てている様子：

上の写真の奥にも少し見えますが、この日の最後に、作業員の方が、横の単管パイプを試験的に１スパンだけ取り付けてみました（＝梁）。近くから見ると：

丈夫な構造にするには、柱と梁を斜めの単管パイプでつなげる必要があります。これを筋交いと言うそうです：

 

柱一本当たり筋交い４本もあり、接続のところを一つ一つ、クランプで取り付けなければなりません。完成までは少し時間がかかりそうです。

工事１週目とは違って、２週目は天気がずっと曇りで気温も下がったので作業はだいぶやりやすくなったのでしょうが、雨の日は逆に大変だったかもしれません。作業員の方が雨にも負けず頑張ってくれました。

Construction started!

Construction of our power plant have finally started!

Ground works began - quite obviously - with bringing in the equipment and materials.

This is picture from August 18, the morning of the first day of construction - a machine is standing lonely in the middle of the field waiting for the work to start. 

So what exactly is going on? With this machine, workmen dig up holes in the ground and place metal pipes vertically inside them. They fix position of the pipes temporarily with diagonal and horizontal pipes. The long vertical pipes are pillars that will support the whole framework. They are 4 meters long, of which 1 meter is under the ground.

After several pipes are raised and their position fixed, concrete is cast into the holes. More precisely,  the lower 20 cm of the underground part of the pipe are covered with soil, the next 50 cm with concrete, and the upper 30 cm again with soil.

Once this is done, the pipe is fully fixed and the temporary diagonal pipes can be removed.

So that's how construction is progressing right now. With more than 50 pillars altogether, it'll take some time to finish.The workmen are doing great job in 35 degree heat!

基礎工事スタート！

今週から発電所の基礎工事が始まりました！

当然と言えば当然ですが、重機と材料を運んでくるところからのスタートです。

工事初日8/18の朝の様子　――　一台の重機がぽつんとおいてあります。乗ってみたいなと思いました。

この重機で穴を彫って、その中に単管パイプを立てておいて、斜めのパイプ、そして横のパイプで仮固定します。縦のパイプは全体の構造を支える柱となります。パイプの長さは4メートル、そのうち地下に埋める部分は1メートルです。

パイプを何本か立てたら、穴にコンクリートを流し込んでいきます。正確に言うと、パイプの埋める部分の下20センチは土、中部の50センチはコンクリート、上の30センチはまた土、という具合です。これでパイプが完全固定されるので、仮固定の斜めのパイプは後ではずします。

こんな感じで工事が進んでいますが、柱は全部で50本以上あるので、時間のかかる作業です。作業員の方は、35度の暑さで頑張ってくれているので本当に感謝です。

"Oo" Schedule Update 2

Here's an update on our project.

Overall, there is a small delay compared to the original schedule. By now (august 2014), the construction should have been almost finished. In reality, it's only going to start next week.

The biggest change is that chickens will only come in April next year instead of this September (next month!). Because the plant is not standing yet, we cannot build the coop and bring in the chickens. After September, it will be too cold to raise them outside, so we'll have to wait until next spring.

In the long run, a half-year delay is not a big deal, but we still can't wait until the plant is finished so that we can do all the different things under the panels!

おお発電所 ロードマップ更新２

うちのプロジェクトのアップデートです。

全体としては元々の計画より少し遅れています。現在（2014年8月）では工事がほぼ終わっているはずでしたが、実際には来週始まるところです。

一番大きな変更は、ヒヨコが来るのは今年の9月（来月！）ではなく、来年の4月ということです。発電所はまだ建っていないので、鶏舎を建ててひよこを入れることはできません。9月が過ぎたら、ヒヨコを外で育てるには寒すぎるので、来年の春まで待たないといけないのです。

長い目で見たら、半年の差はたいしたことではないのですが。

それでも早く発電所を完成させてパネルの下でいろいろやりたいので、来週基礎工事が始まるのはとても嬉しいです！
