Our chickens started laying eggs!
Here are the first two eggs laid in the nest boxes:
Sept 11, 2015: First Egg Discovery ... |
... and Second Egg Discovery |
These were the first two eggs found in nest boxes, but not the very first eggs our chickens laid.
The very first one was laid in the grass (outdoors) 3 days ago. Chickens assumed their egg making job earlier than we expected, so the nest boxes were not open for them yet. I had kept nest boxes closed so that chickens in the new coop get used to sleeping on perches, not nest boxes, which would make for perfect bed, but it would be disaster for the eggs (e.g. they would get dirty from chicken pooh.)
We expected chickens to start laying no sooner than next month, so it was a surprise to find the first egg in the grass and another in the rice husk inside of the coop. The chicken in charge must have been desperate to find a nice place to work. A nice place for laying an egg is dark, narrow and secluded - not a grass field or coop floor! Fortunately after opening the nest boxes, chickens quickly took the hint and there were no more egg discovered in other places.
Now it's just one or two eggs per day, but the number will slowly increase. We have to find new customers by the time there are 20+ eggs a day!
